Waitrose has announced that from today (17 April) the number of delivery slots available each week through its Waitrose & Partners Rapid service will more than treble giving over 2.5 million households the option to use the service to get the food and essentials they need.

  1. Before you book your slot, here are a couple more tips: Delivery pass customers may get early access. For example, Sainsbury's customers with delivery passes can already bag a Christmas delivery slot, while most of those without will have to wait until the end of the week. Consider click and collect.
  2. With a delivery pass, two slots were the maximum you could book for those key December 20-24 dates last year. Otherwise, delivery costs between £2 and £7 depending on the slot.

The supermarket has also confirmed that by the end of next week at least 40% of these new slots will be reserved exclusively for the elderly and vulnerable. It will contact customers on the Government's list of vulnerable people to inform them that they have priority access to Rapid slots.

How do I book a delivery slot? Click the 'Book a slot' option within Groceries followed by 'Home delivery'. Confirm your delivery address and you’ll see the available delivery slots. Available slots have a grey tick which changes to green when selected. The service, which enables shoppers to have up to 25 grocery items delivered within two hours or less or on the same day, has been trialled from eight London shops, as well as in Hove, East Sussex. From today it will be available in the areas surrounding an additional 20 shops across London*.

This will increase the number of available slots from 2,000 to 7,000 each week and means the service is now available to more than 2.5 million households. To check if the service delivers in their area, customers can enter their postcode on the Waitrose & Partners Rapid website.

Waitrose has also announced that it will offer an additional 10,000 online grocery collection slots, taking the total number available each week to 30,000, by introducing its online collection service in around 70 additional shops across the UK by the end of May. Forty shops are expected to offer this by the end of April. Customers can check if the service is available to them by typing in their postcode on the slot booking page at Waitrose.com.

As with Waitrose.com delivery slots, at least a quarter of collection slots will be also reserved for the elderly and vulnerable.

Grocery collection has already launched in its shops in Kingston, Sevenoaks, Wimbledon, East Sheen, Westfield White City, Northwood and Bloomsbury with more being rolled out in the coming weeks.

Ben Stimson, Waitrose.com Director, said:

“We are now making more online deliveries than Christmas week, every week, and have increased slots to reach 20% more customers than usual. We know there is demand for more slots and we are doing all we can to give as many people as possible the opportunity to get the essentials they need - especially those who need them the most.

“In addition to opening up more channels through expanding Waitrose Rapid and increasing the number of stores where online orders can be collected, we have recruited hundreds of drivers and increased the number of extra people-hours picking Waitrose.com orders by nearly 50%.”

John Lewis & Partners has launched a major pilot at its Oxford shop to encourage a ‘reduce, reuse & return’ culture among customers which could provide a blueprint for other shops.

The pilot will test eight ways in which the retailer and its customers can reduce their impact on the planet, potentially saving thousands of tonnes of plastic and packaging from going to landfill.

In a first for a department store, the shop has removed 5p plastic carrier bags to reduce the amount of plastic it produces. The retailer will encourage customers to bring a bag, or buy a reusable one instead. Over a year it’s estimated that this alone could save 5 tonnes of plastic.

The Oxford shop will also become the first in the UK to trial a reusable ‘Click and Collect’ bag made from 100% recycled materials. One in four orders will be delivered to the shop in these reuseable bags, meaning customers will be handed their orders without any additional packaging. Partners will offer to keep and recycle the cardboard and single use plastic bags used to transport other ‘Click and Collect’ orders.

In place of bubble wrap the retailer will trial new recyclable wrapping for china and glass products bought in the shop. The retailer will also be encouraging customers to bring back any hangers they no longer need, so they can be reused or recycled.

As well as reducing the amount of packaging it gives out John Lewis Oxford will reward ‘my John Lewis’ customers who bring back empty beauty product packaging and pre-loved clothing with gift vouchers. The beauty product recycling scheme named ‘BeautyCycle’ was tested earlier this year and this week is being permanently introduced to 36 John Lewis shops which have a Beauty Department.

Customers booking home deliveries with a shop Partner will be offered the chance to help reduce carbon emissions and traffic by selecting an ‘Eco-delivery’ slot when a van would be near their home.

Stephen Cawley, Partner and Head of Sustainability at John Lewis said: “Our customers have told us they want us to help them reduce their impact on the planet and that reducing and recycling packaging is key for them.

“Our message that we want customers to take away just the product that they love and reduce and reuse the packaging that they don’t will be clearly communicated throughout the shop.

“We will listen to customer feedback on this blueprint before deciding what we should introduce to other shops.”
